TIDCO asks the Civil Aviation panel for site permission at Parandur for Chennai's Second Airport

For the city's second airport, which would cost 20,000 crore, the State government has chosen 5,000 acres of land at Parandur, 60 kilometres from the current Chennai airport.

The steering committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation has received the site clearance application from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) for the Parandur second airport in Chennai.

According to the officials, "site clearance" and "project clearance" are essential before beginning work on the new airport in Parandur in the Kancheepuram district.

The State government shall put out a request for "site clearance" for the Parandur airport to the civil aviation ministry, according to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh in August 2022 in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The State government has picked around 5,000 acres of land in the Parandur area near Chennai for the building of Greenfield Airport, according to TIDCO'S response to a question about the ownership status of the property and its size. TIDCO stated during the conference that land acquisitions will take place. TIDCO released a tender in December 2022 to choose a consultant for the creation of an in-depth techno-economic report for the development of the Parandur airport.

According to a statement from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, an investment of 20,000 crore is being planned to build a greenfield airport in Parandur, 60 kilometres from Chennai Airport. The State government has nominated Parandur for a greenfield airport, according to Rajya Sabha written reply from Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh.

The Parandur airport will include two runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, an apron, and a freight terminal. It would also handle 10 crore passengers per year. Every year, Chennai Airport serves over 2.2 crore passengers. It can accommodate 3.5 crore people annually for the following seven years after the present modernization work.
