The detailed project report (DPR) for the metro rail extension from Poonamallee to the greenfield airport in Parandur, Chennai, is set to be completed by the end of 2024. Aarvee Associated Architects Engineers and Consultants Pvt Ltd has been identified as the lowest bidder to prepare the DPR. Once the contract is finalized, the firm will undertake the task of detailing the 43.63km route with 19 stations.
The DPR will encompass crucial information such as the route length, corridor type, station locations, train specifications, overall cost, and projected ridership. Initially estimated at ₹10,712 crore, the project aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate seamless travel for commuters. The timeline for completing the DPR is set at six months.
The proposed metro line is an extension of the existing Lighthouse-Poonamallee Bypass corridor-4 of phase-2, with some sections anticipated to commence operations by late 2025. At the feasibility study stage, stations were earmarked along the route, including key locations like Nazarathpet Police Checkpost, Sriperumbudur, and the Parandur airport area.
Officials have hinted at a potentially wider spacing between stations compared to urban areas, allowing for higher train speeds. Once operational, the metro link to Parandur airport will offer uninterrupted connectivity, enabling passengers to travel seamlessly from the city center to the new airport terminal. Plans also envision a smooth interchange for passengers traveling between the existing Meenambakkam airport and the upcoming facility via designated metro stations.
The first phase of the airport, featuring both domestic and international terminals along with essential infrastructure, is slated for completion by 2029. The government has initiated steps to acquire necessary land parcels, signaling progress towards the realization of this ambitious transportation project.
