Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase 2 extension to be ready in three months- Kilambakkam (Kelambakkam), Avadi, and Parandur

The State government proposes to expand the 118.9-km Metro Rail Phase 2 project by another 93 km, covering several key locations of Kelambakkam, Kilambakkam, Avadi, and Parandur

The Chennai Metro Rail system's Phase 2 extension will shortly be the subject of a thorough feasibility study.

The state of Tamil Nadu stated its intention to add 93 km to the current 118.9-km Phase 2 Metro Rail project last year.

Kilambakkam (Kelambakkam), Avadi, and Parandur—locations of the second airport—would all be included in the expansion.

In corridors 3, 4, and 5—Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur—Phase 2 of the project is now underway.

The 93 km-long expanded network will include three segments in total. They are the 50 km section from Poonamallee to Parandur, the 17 km stretch via Thirumangalam and Mogappair from Koyambedu to Avadi, and the 26 km stretch from Siruseri to Kilambakkam via Kelambakkam.

Recently, representatives of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. stated that a consultant had received a contract to conduct a study on whether the future transit system for some lines will be Metro or Metrolite.

The report should be finished in the following three months; the consultant has already started working on it. Before delivering the final report to the government, authorities will have meetings and collect comments from stakeholders.

The choice of system to use for the aforementioned lines won't be made until after that.

The location of a second airport, Parandur, which is 60 km from Meenambakkam airport, would be connected by a mass rapid transport system.
