The Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports granted approval on July 9 for the Parandur site, following an application from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited.
The Union government has granted approval for the development of Chennai’s second airport at the Parandur site, as informed to Parliament on Monday. The Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports approved the site on July 9, following an application from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO).
According to the plan prepared by TIDCO, the new greenfield airport will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹32,704 crore and will be built in four phases. The airport, featuring three terminal buildings, is designed to handle 100 million passengers annually.
The proposal underwent thorough examination in consultation with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Ministry of Defence/Indian Air Force in accordance with the Greenfield Airport (GFA) Policy. After the consultation process was completed, the proposal was submitted to the Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports, which recommended granting Site Clearance, as stated by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu, to the Rajya Sabha.
The committee responsible for this decision includes nine officials from various departments, such as the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA, AAI, Ministry of Defence, and the Indian Meteorological Department, among others.
TIDCO submitted the application for site clearance in 2023, with the Tamil Nadu government finalizing Parandur in Kancheepuram district as the location for Chennai’s second airport in 2022.
Construction for the first phase of the airport is set to commence in January 2026, with an expected completion date of December 2028. The subsequent phases will follow, with the entire project projected to be completed by December 2046.
