Chennai's Second Airport Gets Site Clearance for Parandur, Construction to Begin in 2026

The Union government has greenlit the development of Chennai’s second airport at the Parandur site, following an application from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO). The approval, granted by the Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports on 9 July, marks a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure growth. TIDCO's proposal, which was submitted in 2023, came after the Tamil Nadu government selected Parandur in Kancheepuram district as the preferred location in 2022. The greenfield airport is planned to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 32,704 crore and will be constructed in four phases, ultimately accommodating 100 million passengers annually across three terminal buildings.

Construction of the first phase is scheduled to commence in January 2026 and is expected to be completed by December 2028, with subsequent phases following until the final phase's completion in December 2046. This project has undergone thorough examination and consultation with various authorities, including the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Ministry of Defence/Indian Air Force, as stipulated by the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy. Despite the project's strategic importance and potential economic benefits, it has faced significant opposition from local residents. Protests have persisted for over 700 days, with families in two of the 13 affected villages considering relocation to Andhra Pradesh due to displacement concerns.

State Chief Minister M K Stalin has assured that both the existing airport at Meenambakkam and the new Parandur airport will operate simultaneously to meet the burgeoning demand in the civil aviation sector. This dual-airport system aims to replicate successful models in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Goa, which manage multiple airports to handle increased passenger traffic. The addition of Parandur airport is expected to bolster Chennai’s ranking in the aviation sector, enhancing its connectivity and boosting economic growth in the region.

Record Budget allocation of Rs.6362 Crore for rail projects in Tamil Nadu: Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnav

The Union Budget 2024-25, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, has allocated a substantial Rs 6,362 crore for railway projects in Tamil Nadu. This marks a significant increase, nearly seven times more than the Rs 879 crore allocated between 2009 and 2014. Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted this remarkable boost in funding during a press conference today. The enhanced budget aims to improve railway infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and promote economic growth in the region. The increased allocation reflects the government's commitment to developing Tamil Nadu's transportation network. With this substantial investment, the state can expect upgraded facilities, faster project completions, and better services for passengers. The move is poised to benefit both urban and rural areas, fostering overall development and progress.
